Terezín - Theresienstadt

 

Město Terezín bylo založeno v roce 1780 jako pevnost. Ta se budovala 11 let a v době míru její posádka činit 5 655 mužů. Již v roce 1782 získal Terezín statut svobodného královského města, civilní správa však byla ve městě zřízena až v roce 1830. Pevnost nikdy nesplnila své původní poslání, od pol. 19. století sloužily pevnostní kasematy jako vězení. Zemřel zde například sarajevský atentátník Gavrilo Princip. V roce 1940 zřídilo v terezínské Malé pevnosti gestapo policejní věznici a v roce 1941 bylo v Terezíně zřízeno židovské ghetto. Terezín se pak stal přestupní stanicí do vyhlazovacích táborů. Během okupace jím prošlo 160 000 lidí, z toho Malou pevností 33 000.  

The town of Terezín was founded in 1780 as a fortress. It was built for 11 years and in peacetime its crew amounted to 5,655 men. Already in 1782, Terezín gained the status of a free royal city, but the civil administration was not established in the city until 1830. The fortress never fulfilled its original mission; from the middle of the 19th century, the fortress casemates served as prisons. For example, Gavrilo Princip, a Sarajevo assassin, died here. In 1940, the Gestapo set up a police prison in the Small Fortress in Terezín, and in 1941 a Jewish ghetto was established in Terezín. Terezín then became a transfer station to the extermination camps. During the occupation, 160,000 people passed through it, of which 33,000 passed through the Small Fortress.

Die Stadt Theresienstadt wurde 1780 als Festung gegründet. Sie wurde in 11 Jahren errichtet und in Friedenszeiten betrug ihre Besatzung 5.655 Mann. Bereits 1782 erlangte Theresienstadt den Status einer freien, königlichen Stadt, aber die Zivilverwaltung wurde erst 1830 in der Stadt eingerichtet. Die Festung erfüllte nie ihre ursprüngliche Mission, ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts dienten die Festungskasematten als Gefängnis. Zum Beispiel starb hier Gavrilo Princip, der Attentäter von Sarajevo. 1940 richtete die Gestapo in der Kleinen Festung in Theresienstadt ein Polizeigefängnis ein, und 1941 wurde in Theresienstadt ein jüdisches Ghetto eingerichtet. Theresienstadt wurde dann eine Übergabestation in die Vernichtungslager. Während der Besatzung passierten 160.000 Menschen die Stadte, davon 33.000 die Kleine Festung.
