Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)

The Luncheon of the Boating Party
The famous painting "Luncheon of the Boating Party" was completed in 1881 by the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. It depicts a relaxed group of the artist's friends lingering on the sunny terrace of the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the Seine. Renoir masterfully captures the fleeting play of light and shadow falling through the awning onto the white tablecloth and the guests' clothing. The lively composition is particularly remarkable, creating a tangible dynamism through diverse lines of sight and casual interactions. The work is considered a pinnacle of Impressionism, perfectly embodying the joie de vivre of late 19th-century Parisian society. Today, this impressive oil painting captivates visitors from all over the world at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

Castle of the Dukes of Brittany
The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is an imposing landmark in the heart of Nantes and is considered the last Loire Valley castle before the ocean. It was primarily built in the 15th century by Duke Francis II and his daughter Anne of Brittany to assert the independence of Brittany from France. The complex merges a massive granite military fortress with an elegant ducal palace in the Flamboyant Gothic style, already featuring Renaissance elements. After Brittany's annexation by France in 1532, the castle served as a royal residence and later as a barracks and arms depot. Today, the extensively restored structure houses the Nantes History Museum, which illuminates the city's past.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the "most beautiful villages in France," is picturesquely situated between two steep cliffs in Provence. The village's name is derived from the Latin word "monasterium" (monastery), as it was founded by monks in the 5th century. Since the 17th century, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie has been famous for its faience pottery, a tradition that is still maintained today by numerous artisans. A golden star hangs on a rope suspended between the two cliffs above the village, and its origin is the subject of an ancient legend. Above the village, a steep path of 262 steps leads up to the Notre-Dame de Beauvoir chapel, which offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is also located at the entrance to the famous Verdon Gorge and near Lake Sainte-Croix.

The Lighthouse of the end of the world
In 1881, wishing to assert its authority over Tierra del Fuego, the Argentine government undertook, in extreme weather conditions, the construction of a wooden lighthouse to mark the dangerous Strait of Magellan. In 1994, an adventurer from La Rochelle, André Bronner, and ten of his companions found the remains of the lighthouse and restored it after two months of hard work. At the same time, in La Rochelle, at the Pointe des Minimes, work began on building an exact replica of the ‘Lighthouse at the End of the World’.

Longwy - Langich

The fortifications of Vauban
The fortifications of Longwy were designed by the famous French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban in the 17th century. Vauban created them as part of a vast defensive system along France's northeastern border to protect the country from invaders. The Longwy fortress is one of the so-called "space-saving" citadels, perfectly integrated into the existing urban layout. The star-shaped bastions, characteristic of the fortifications, offer optimal defense by eliminating blind spots for attackers. Since 2008, Longwy's fortifications have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Fortifications of Vauban." Today, they are a tourist attraction and a striking example of Baroque military architecture.

Cahors

The Pont Valentré is a famous medieval bridge located in Cahors, in the Lot department of France. This fortified bridge is one of the most iconic monuments in the region and is often regarded as a masterpiece of medieval architecture.

Constructed between 1308 and 1378, the Pont Valentré is a stone bridge with six arches spanning the Lot River. It is approximately 138 meters long. The bridge is unique due to its three defensive towers, each equipped with battlements, machicolations, and other typical medieval defensive features. These towers were built to protect the river crossing and symbolize the power and wealth of Cahors during the medieval period.

The Pont Valentré is also surrounded by legends, the most famous being the "devil's" legend. According to the story, the architect of the bridge, frustrated by the slow progress of the construction, made a pact with the devil to complete the work. However, the architect tricked the devil by asking him to carry water in a sieve for the final stone of the bridge. Enraged by the deception, the devil attempted to dislodge this final stone every night. Today, this stone is represented on the bridge by a sculpture of the devil.

The Pont Valentré has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. It is one of Cahors' main tourist attractions, drawing numerous visitors each year.
