Berlin

Palace of the Republic
The Palace of the Republic was a multi-functional building in East Berlin, constructed between 1973 and 1976 on the former site of the Berlin City Palace, which was damaged in the war and later demolished. It served as the seat of the Volkskammer, the parliament of the German Democratic Republic.
Following German reunification in 1990, the Palast der Republik was closed because of significant asbestos contamination. A lengthy debate ensued regarding its demolition or preservation. Ultimately, the building was completely dismantled between 2006 and 2008. The Humboldt Forum, which reconstructs the historic facades of the Berlin City Palace, now stands in its place.

Chemnitz (Karl-Marx-Stadt)

Chemnitz, formerly known as Karl-Marx-Stadt, is a major Saxon city with a rich history. A striking landmark is the monumental head of Karl Marx, affectionately called "Nischel" by locals, which serves as a reminder of the city's socialist past. Although Chemnitz doesn't have its own commercial airport, the historic Chemnitz-Siegmar Airport, which operated until 1928, was recently immortalized on a special stamp by Deutsche Post. Chemnitz was the European Capital of Culture in 2025.

Alt Marzahn new housing estates
The major development of Neubausiedlungen in Alt Marzahn took place during the 1970s and 1980s when East Germany (GDR) was focused on addressing housing shortages through the construction of large apartment complexes.
The Neubausiedlungen primarily consist of Plattenbauten (prefabricated concrete slab buildings), which were a hallmark of GDR urban planning.

Palais Ephraim
