Prvé osídlenia hradného kopca siahajú až do praveku, pričom najstaršie archeologické nálezy pochádzajú z mladšej doby kamennej.

A 10. és 11. század folyamán a vár Magyarország jelentős politikai és katonai központjává vált. A magyar királyok kulcsszerepet játszottak a pozsonyi vár történetében.

  • I. (Szent) István király: A vár fontos támaszponttá vált uralkodása idején, a 11. század elején, amikor Istvánt Magyarország első királyává koronázták.
  • II.

Évtizedekig romokban hevert, mígnem a 20. században megkezdődött a fokozatos újjáépítése. Az 1950-es években kezdődő helyreállítási munkálatok több évtizedig tartottak, és a várat eredeti formájában rekonstruálták.
Ma a pozsonyi vár Szlovákia egyik leglátogatottabb turisztikai látványossága. Masszív falai és tornyai csodálatos panorámás kilátást nyújtanak Pozsonyra, a Dunára és a környező tájra. A vár a Szlovák Nemzeti Múzeumnak ad otthont, ahol számos kiállítás mutatja be Szlovákia történelmét, régészetét és művészeti gyűjteményeit. A legérdekesebb kiállítások közé tartoznak a Nagymorva Birodalom, a középkori Magyarország és különféle történelmi leletek bemutatói.

Pressburger Burg

Bratislava Castle
The Bratislava Castle, majestically perched above the Slovak capital, is one of the most prominent and well-known symbols of Bratislava. This imposing castle, dominating the city, is situated on a strategically advantageous hill above the Danube River, and its history extends deep into the past, making it a jewel among Slovakia's historical monuments.

The first settlements on the castle hill date back to prehistoric times, with the earliest archaeological finds originating from the Neolithic period. In the 9th century, during the Great Moravian Empire, the first stone castle was built at this site. During the 10th and 11th centuries, the castle became a significant political and military center of the Kingdom of Hungary. The Hungarian kings played a key role in the history of Bratislava Castle.

  • King Stephen I (Saint Stephen): The castle became an important stronghold during his reign at the beginning of the 11th century when Stephen was crowned the first king of Hungary.
  • King Andrew II: In 1221, he issued the Golden Bull here, a significant document that guaranteed the rights of the Hungarian nobility and limited the king's power.
  • King Sigismund of Luxembourg: In the 15th century, he initiated an extensive Gothic reconstruction of the castle, transforming it into a massive fortress capable of withstanding attacks from the Hussites. During this period, the castle was significantly expanded and fortified, giving it its characteristic stylized appearance with massive defensive towers and walls.
In the 16th century, the castle became a royal residence and underwent Renaissance reconstruction. During the reign of Maria Theresa in the 18th century, Bratislava was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, and the castle underwent another significant transformation. Maria Theresa ordered a Baroque reconstruction, during which new representative rooms were added, giving the castle the appearance of a royal residence.
In 1811, the castle was struck by a catastrophe in the form of a devastating fire that nearly destroyed it entirely. For decades, the castle lay in ruins until its gradual restoration began in the 20th century. The reconstruction work, which started in the 1950s, lasted several decades, and the castle was restored to its original form.
Today, Bratislava Castle is one of the most visited tourist sites in Slovakia. Its massive walls and towers offer stunning panoramic views of Bratislava, the Danube, and the surrounding landscape. The castle houses the Slovak National Museum, which features several exhibitions dedicated to the history of Slovakia, archaeology, and art collections. The most interesting exhibits include displays on the Great Moravian Empire, medieval Hungary, and various historical artifacts.
