Historisch als Viehmarkt entstanden, entwickelte er sich im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem zentralen Verkehrsknotenpunkt und einem Symbol des urbanen Wandels. Das unübersehbare Wahrzeichen des Platzes ist der 368 Meter hohe Berliner Fernsehturm, der das Stadtbild weit über die Grenzen Mitte hinaus prägt.
