The historic city of Debrecen lies in eastern Hungary at the heart of the Great Hungarian Plain, close to the Romanian border. As the country's second-largest urban center, the metropolis looks back on a significant past and is often called "the Calvinist Rome" due to its deep Protestant traditions. The city's imposing landmark is the Great Reformed Church on the main square, which served as the backdrop for historic decisions concerning Hungarian independence in the 19th century. Beyond its rich architectural heritage, the university town features a dynamic cultural scene, the expansive Nagyerdő Park, and the state-of-the-art Aquaticum thermal bath.
