Mayotte

Mayotte is a volcanic archipelago in the Indian Ocean, geographically located in the Comoro Archipelago between Madagascar and Mozambique. Politically, the territory became a French overseas department in 2011 and is thus an integral part of the European Union. At the heart of the region lies one of the world's largest and deepest turquoise lagoons, surrounded by an impressive coral reef. Culturally, Mayotte combines French influences with African and Arab-Islamic traditions, which is also reflected in local languages such as Shimaore. The economy is largely based on agriculture and fishing, with the export of vanilla and ylang-ylang playing a traditional role.
